Electron Village Theme Camp Sign

What's a theme camp without a good sign to let wanderers know where they are, or aren't? For Apogaea 2016, the Colorado regional Burning Man event, our camp, Electron Village, after many successful art installations and events decided to add a camp sign to our repertoire. The very talented Stephanie Swartz created the design.

We were fortunate to have access to a ShopBot at the local hackerspace, Solid State Depot. A piece of wood was sacrificed first to make sure everything was functioning.

Then we went to work on the multiple layers of HDPE plastic, milling the front of the sign and a back piece with a cavity for the electronics.

Before everything was encapsulated in epoxy to make it weatherproof, the LEDs were tested. The placements turned out really great!

With the sign finished, it was time to take it to the Colorado desert that was home Apogaea this year. It fit right in with the rest of our blinky art!

It even caught the eye of other attendees!
